Extensions, from the footings up

Brick2Brick UK builds single-storey, double-storey and wrap-around extensions across Worcester, Bromsgrove and south Birmingham. The team digs the footings, builds the walls and puts in the steels.

What kinds of extension does Brick2Brick UK build?

The common types, and a few less common ones:

  • Double-storey extensions: in 2025 the team built a rear double-storey extension with a full house refurb.
  • Wrap-around extensions: two in 2025, one of them with a loft conversion.
  • Single-storey extensions, such as a kitchen extension on a bungalow, finished with dentil feature brickwork and coping stones (2023).
  • A garage extension, worked on over the May bank holiday weekend in 2023.
  • Extensions for regular customers and for other local builders, and a small orangery (2023).

What are the stages of an extension build?

Every extension follows the same order:

  • Footings: trenches dug down to firm ground, the spoil lifted away by a grab lorry, then concrete poured.
  • Up to DPC: brick and block built up to the damp proof course.
  • Floor slab: hardcore, membrane, insulation and concrete.
  • Walls: blockwork inside, brick outside, built up to wall plate.
  • Steels: beams in where the house is opened up. On a Longbridge extension in 2026 the steels went in ready for the roof to start the following Monday.
  • Roof and windows: the walls are cut up ready for the roofer, the windows go in and the scaffold comes down.

Extension carried out by the team started building up Dpc on Thursday floor concreted on Saturday and main structure built on Tuesday and Wednesday for 1 on our regular customers.

What is a wrap-around extension?

A side extension and a rear extension built as one, so the new space turns the corner of the house. It is the kind of job Liam is proudest of. In 2025 the team built one in Bromsgrove with a loft conversion, from the roof coming off in July to the windows going in that August, and had another wrap-around under way in May 2025.

Wrap-arounds usually need a planning application, because the limits for side and rear extensions both apply. The wrap-around extension guide explains why, and the Bromsgrove build story shows each stage.

This time last year some of the team was tackling these two extensions. One huge rap around extension with a loft conversion and the other a rear double storie extension and full house refurb.

Do you need planning permission for an extension?

Not always. Under permitted development, a single-storey rear extension can go up to 3 metres beyond the original rear wall, or 4 metres for a detached house, without an application, and up to 6 or 8 metres through the prior approval process. Side extensions, two-storey extensions and anything on designated land have tighter rules, and the Planning Portal says most extensions need building regulations approval either way.

The planning permission guide sets out the limits with the official sources, and the Party Wall Act guide covers work near a neighbour’s house. Check with your council before you start.

Can the same team do the inside and the garden?

Yes. The same team takes out walls and fits steels inside, blocks up old doorways and forms new openings, and carries jobs through to plastering and decorating. See renovations.

Outside, the sister company Fence2Fence UK can finish the job. On a Worcestershire job in 2026, Brick2Brick UK built the extension and a multi-level patio, and Fence2Fence UK put up the fence: see the extension, patio and fence.

What customers say

Liam and his team came and built our extension on our property and removed bushes from garden and installed new fence. Liam and his team were polite, clean, friendly, always on time and nothing was too much trouble. Liam was always there to help guide my wife and I throughout the build. We couldn't recommend Liam and his team enough 5☆. They definitely are the best 100%. We definitely will be Brick2Brick in the future. Thankyou again

Questions people ask

Does Brick2Brick UK build double-storey extensions?

Yes. In 2025 the team built a rear double-storey extension with a full house refurb.

Has Brick2Brick UK built wrap-around extensions?

Yes, two in 2025, including the Bromsgrove job with a loft conversion.

Do I need planning permission for a single-storey rear extension?

Not if it stays within permitted development: up to 3 metres beyond the original rear wall (4 metres for a detached house) and no more than 4 metres high. Larger ones up to 6 or 8 metres need prior approval. Check with your council.

Can Brick2Brick UK do a loft conversion?

The Bromsgrove wrap-around in 2025 included a loft conversion. For a loft conversion on its own, ask Liam.

Who digs the footings?

Brick2Brick UK’s own team. It digs and concretes the footings, with a grab lorry to take the spoil away, and builds up from there.
