Brickwork: walls, repairs, repointing and chimneys

Brick2Brick UK started out as a bricklaying business, and brickwork is still the core of the work. The team builds new walls, rebuilds damaged ones, matches bricks for repairs and repoints old brickwork.

What walls does Brick2Brick UK build?

The walls the team builds:

  • Boundary walls from the footings up, such as the Cofton boundary wall in September 2026.
  • Garden walls: Lucy’s 2023 review mentions a new garden wall, repointing and a new concrete path.
  • Retaining walls, including one put right in 2026 after a customer was let down by a rogue trader.
  • Curved walls and brick piers.
  • Like-for-like rebuilds: a wall in Alvechurch rebuilt in red engineering bricks topped with blue bricks.
  • Walls for businesses: a pub wall in Droitwich taken down and rebuilt for a brewery after a tree fell on it.

How does Brick2Brick UK repair damaged brickwork?

Repairs are about matching what is already there. Recent examples:

  • Brick matching: in June 2023 the team bricked up the hole left by an old boiler flue, matching the bricks and the pattern of the wall. Kurtis’s review of that job is below.
  • Replacing bricks a plumber had drilled through, April 2023; Emma’s review is below.
  • Toothing out old brickwork so reclaimed bricks blend in where a window has been taken out (2023).
  • Replacing perished brick on edge with class B engineering bricks (2023).
  • Crack stitching: raking out, stitching with rods and resin, and repointing (2023).
  • Walls hit by vehicles, rebuilt: see insurance work.

What does repointing involve?

Repointing means raking out worn mortar to a set depth and filling the joints with new mortar. The Planning Portal’s rule of thumb: if the mortar can be scraped out with a door key, the wall may need repointing. It also warns not to repoint a crack before the cause is known.

The team repointed a cottage in Barnt Green in March 2023, raked out and repointed a house in October 2023 once the weather allowed, and repointed for an elderly couple in May 2026. James’s review of the cottage job is below.

Does Brick2Brick UK rebuild chimneys?

Yes. In 2025 the team took down and rebuilt two chimneys on a Grade II listed building in Atherstone, near Tamworth, along with maintenance and a new roof, keeping as many original materials as possible. In 2023 they rebuilt the back quarter of a chimney and repointed it, and in February 2026 raked out and repointed another.

Work on a listed building may need listed building consent from the council as well as any other approval, so check before work starts.

Great result on the grade 2 listed building in Atherstone Tamworth where we took down and rebuilt two chimneys, maintenance to various other parts of the building and renewing the huge roof trying to keep as many original materials as possible and what a result.

What other brickwork does the team take on?

Smaller jobs come up between the big ones:

  • Garage doors bricked up, with a soldier course under the new window to match the house (Bromsgrove, 2023).
  • Bricking up old windows, voids and heater openings.
  • Rebuilding a fire surround, and opening up brickwork for a new log burner (2023).
  • An acid clean-down of new brickwork when a job is finished (2026).
  • In 2023, brickwork on a new apartment block, with the first lift almost done in March.

What customers say

I came across brick2brick on Facebook and needed someone to come out urgently to fill in a hole left by the removal of an old gas boiler, which posed a security risk. They came out the very next day and did an excellent job matching the bricks and pattern of the brick work, you’d hardly know anything was there. Really pleased with the workmanship and speed in which the job was done . Would definitely recommend and will use again. To top it off , what a lovely bloke , on time, polite , and a pleasure to have in our home.

Pleased with the new garden wall, repointing and replacement of concrete path by Liam and the team. The team were very friendly and cleaned up after the job. Have already had a quote for the next job!

Facebook recommendation · Lucy · June 2023

Popped over this morning to replace some bricks after a plumber made our brick work into Swiss cheese. Super quick, tidy and cleaned the patio afterwards. Really happy and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend! Thanks guys!

Facebook recommendation · Emma · April 2023

Liam and his crew did an excellent job repointing our cottage, they worked very hard, were very pleasant and helpful and cleaned up afterwards. I would thoroughly recommend them.

Brickwork · FAQ

Questions people ask

Can Brick2Brick UK match my existing bricks?

Yes. The team matches bricks for repairs: old brickwork toothed out so reclaimed bricks blend in, and a boiler flue hole filled to match the pattern of the wall.

How do I know if my wall needs repointing?

The Planning Portal says that if the mortar can be scraped out of the joints with a door key, the wall may need repointing. Get cracks looked at before anything is repointed.

Does Brick2Brick UK work on listed buildings?

Yes. In 2025 the team rebuilt two chimneys on a Grade II listed building in Atherstone and renewed its roof, keeping as many original materials as possible. Listed buildings may need listed building consent, so check with your council.

Do I need planning permission for a garden wall?

Usually not, up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles, unless the property is listed or the rights have been removed. See the height rules guide.

Does the Party Wall Act cover garden walls?

A masonry wall standing astride the boundary is a party fence wall, so work on it may need a notice under the Act. A garden wall wholly on your own land is not a party fence wall, but building a new wall up to the boundary line still needs a notice at least a month before.
